As you wander through the museum, you'll be greeted by a variety of archaeological and ethnographic items, including bowls, wine dishes, ritual dishes, Qvevri, Tamada, wine, grape pips, and more. The Qvevri, Georgia's most famous winemaking vessel, takes center stage in the museum, highlighting its enduring role in traditional Georgian winemaking.
In 2015, a joint project between the Georgian National Museum and the University of Toronto unearthed ancient clay vessels at an archaeological site in southeastern Georgia. The residue found within these vessels—dating back to 6000 BCE—confirmed Georgia as the birthplace of grape winemaking. Georgian winemaking practices emerged 3,000 years before the invention of writing and 5,000 years before the start of the Iron Age.
The Tbilisi Wine Museum is housed in a 17th-century building that has been designated as a historical monument. Once known as "Karvasla," this underground city remains remarkably well-preserved.
